Born in Colorado Springs, USA Mitchell's family immigrated to New Zealand in the early 1970's.​

Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam, University of Auckland, New Zealand.
2010
Mitchell won the Paramount Wallace Art Award, winning a six months artist residency in New York, USA, at the ISCP (International studio and curatorial program) and was an artist in Residency
2011, Point B : Brooklyn, NYC, USA.
Since then Mitchell has completed several International and National Artist Residencies.

Mitchell has taught Summer School and
gives regular artist talks. As a full - time Artist Mitchell visits Secondary schools teaching students about acrylic painting techniques and being an Artist in New Zealand.

Mitchell exhibits regularly in Auckland, and Wellington, New Zealand.

Works are held in private and public art collections in the likes of New Zealand, New York, Cairo, Australia, UK and France.
